A second-half brace from Antoine Griezmann secured Atletico Madrid a thrilling 4-3 turnaround home victory over Sevilla in LaLiga on Sunday, as the hosts celebrated their ninth consecutive triumph in all contests.
Atletico began with authority at home, with Griezmann striking the crossbar before Rodrigo De Paul netted the opener in the 10th minute, blasting a missile from the edge of the area into the top corner.
Sevilla’s Dodi Lukebakio levelled just two minutes later with a strong low drive following a corner before Isaac Romero pushed them ahead after a swift counter-attack in the 32nd minute, shooting past goalkeeper Jan Oblak, who could only graze the ball.
Atletico believed they had equalised just before the interval when Julian Alvarez slotted the ball in the net from a De Paul assist, but the VAR overturned the Argentine forward’s effort for an offside in the buildup.
Juanlu Sanchez then widened the visitors’ lead in the 57th minute with a close-range strike off Kike Salas’s second contribution of the game before Griezmann reduced the deficit for Atletico five minutes later.
Substitute Samuel Lino fired from long range to beat Sevilla keeper Alvaro Fernandez, who had made some vital stops but could not block the Brazilian’s first goal of the campaign.
Griezmann struck again four minutes into added time to confirm the win that placed Atletico third in the table with 35 points, one behind Real Madrid and three short of leaders Barcelona.
“We are performing well. We struggled to claw our way back into the match. Sevilla had two opportunities and converted both,” Griezmann told Movistar.
“We are a cohesive squad, we all follow the same direction. It’s the route forward to dream ambitiously. We aim to win everything. There will be tough phases, but we must keep battling.”
Sevilla, who nearly achieved their first success away to Atletico since 2008, stay 13th on 19 points.
“We conceded excessively. It got away from us. The draw wasn’t even bad. It hurts,” Sevilla’s Fernandez said.
“But we understand that Atletico are the sharpest team in LaLiga, so we are immensely proud.”
