Chung Re-Elected as South Korean FA President for Fourth Term

South Korean businessman Chung Mong-gyu has secured a fourth term as the head of the Korea Football Association (KFA) after winning Wednesday’s election, despite facing controversy over coaching appointments last year that led to calls for his resignation.

Chung emerged victorious in the first round of voting and will continue leading the KFA for another four years.

Following his reelection, he expressed gratitude to those who supported him, acknowledging his growing responsibility and reaffirming his commitment to fulfilling his promises.

“I hope the weather gets warmer and that spring arrives in football as well,” he remarked.

In November, Chung, who has been at the KFA’s helm since 2013, came under scrutiny from the sports ministry for allegedly violating regulations in the hiring process of two men’s national team head coaches.

An audit into the recruitment of Hong Myung-bo and his predecessor, Jurgen Klinsmann, led to accusations of favoritism and public criticism. However, Hong denied that his appointment was influenced by preferential treatment from the KFA.

Earlier this month, a court granted a request from the KFA to suspend the ministry’s decision to penalize Chung, thereby allowing him to run for reelection, as reported by Yonhap News Agency.

When questioned about his approach to improving relations with the government, Chung stated that he would clarify his stance at a later time.

He has also previously committed to donating 5 billion won ($3.49 million) toward the construction of a new football center.
