Bundesliga top scorer Harry Kane is expected to miss Bayern Munich’s home league match against third-placed Eintracht Frankfurt on Sunday, as he has not yet fully recovered from a calf muscle issue, coach Vincent Kompany said on Saturday.
The England skipper, who has scored 21 times in the league this season, suffered the injury in Tuesday’s Champions League playoff second-leg draw against Celtic.
“This is not the first time this season that we have had to handle this situation,” Kompany told a press briefing. “We cannot replace Harry one-on-one because not many strikers can score 40 or 50 goals in a season.
“We will try to find the best answer tomorrow to win the match. If he is unavailable, we will deal with it within the squad. We still have one more training session.”
Kane is not expected to be out for more than a few days, with Kompany confident he will return for their next fixture. “It is good that we are not talking about three or four weeks. This is a short-term issue,” the coach said.
Kane’s absence is unfortunate with Bayern drawing their last two games and set to face Bayer Leverkusen in an all-German Champions League Round of 16 next month.
They finished 0-0 at Leverkusen in the league last week before a 1-1 against Celtic in their Champions League playoff, securing a 3-2 aggregate victory on Tuesday.
The Bundesliga frontrunners are eight points ahead of second-placed Leverkusen.
“We now have Frankfurt at home. You know we can create special moments in this stadium with our fans, and that’s our main focus,” Kompany said.
