Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta insists there is no extra pressure on his side to perform in the Champions League, despite their recent struggles in domestic competitions. Speaking ahead of their last-16 second-leg clash against PSV Eindhoven, Arteta emphasized the team’s focus on maintaining their European momentum.
The Gunners secured a commanding 7-1 victory away in the first leg, all but guaranteeing their place in the quarter-finals. However, their Premier League form has faltered, with a three-game winless streak leaving them 15 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool, albeit with a game in hand. Additionally, early exits from both the FA Cup and League Cup have heightened concerns over Arsenal’s silverware prospects this season.
When asked if the Champions League now represents Arsenal’s most realistic route to a trophy, Arteta remained steadfast in his outlook.
“It’s a competition we approach with great enthusiasm and energy. We’ve been very consistent in Europe, and winning tomorrow would put us in a strong position,” Arteta told reporters. “It’s not about added pressure; it’s simply the reality of where we are and what we aim to achieve.”
With Arsenal potentially facing either reigning champions Real Madrid or city rivals Atletico Madrid in the quarter-finals, Arteta acknowledged the level of competition but stressed the importance of focusing on the present challenge.
“From the moment the draw was made, you naturally look ahead at potential opponents,” he admitted. “But the key is earning the right to be in that position.”
The Spanish manager also hinted at rotating his squad for the PSV clash, potentially handing opportunities to some of Arsenal’s younger talents.
“Whenever we’ve had the chance, we’ve given our young players valuable minutes,” he said. “They’ve contributed so much to the team, and it’s important to recognize their efforts by giving them opportunities when possible.”
With a commanding first-leg lead, Arsenal will look to seal their place in the quarter-finals while balancing the demands of their domestic campaign. Arteta’s men take on PSV Eindhoven at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night, aiming to keep their Champions League dream alive.
