Rock-bottom Posh frustrate sour Cherries

Bournemouth’s promotion push continued to stutter as they completed an unwanted record of failing to win against all three newly-promoted teams at home this season after a 1-1 draw with rock-bottom Peterborough United.

Peterborough came into this game with the worst defence in the division, so they were always going to have to ride their luck against a potent Bournemouth attack. The home side passed up several excellent openings in the first half with Philip Billing and Dominic Solanke being guilty of passing up multiple opportunities. The ‘Posh’ did weather that storm and got their reward when Jack Marriott fired them in front just before the half-hour mark with a composed finish into the bottom corner.

The home fans demonstrated their frustrations after the HT whistle and there were signs of desperation as chances were passed up, but Ryan Christie produced a wonderful solo goal just after the restart to level the game. His driving run was followed up by a finish with his weaker right foot which appeared to catch David Cornell out of position as it trundled into the net.

Surprisingly, it was the visitors who started to dominate the game as the second half wore on. Bournemouth failed to create anything clear-cut as only two of their 22 shots found the target. Peterborough were able to build sustained pressure through a series of corners and free-kicks around the box but weren’t able to find a winner. In the end, it’s a point that neither team will be overjoyed with, especially as Bournemouth would’ve expected to win this easily and Peterborough remain at the foot of the table, but it could still be a valuable result in their fight against the drop.
