FC Barcelona is on the verge of signing Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny as a temporary replacement for Marc-Andre ter Stegen, who is sidelined for the season due to a knee injury.
The 34-year-old, who previously played for Juventus and Arsenal, arrived in Barcelona today. After completing his medical tests and contract signing, the club is expected to make an official announcement shortly.
Szczesny has reportedly agreed to a short-term deal until the season’s end, with a salary lower than what he earned at Juventus.
What number will Szczesny wear? Now that his signing is almost finalized, the big question is which number Szczesny will wear on his Barcelona jersey.
As of now, the available numbers in the Barcelona first-team squad are 12, 22, and 25.
However, according to La Liga regulations, goalkeepers are required to wear either No. 1, No. 13, or No. 25.
Since Ter Stegen holds the No. 1 jersey and Inaki Pena wears No. 13, Szczesny will likely be assigned the No. 25 shirt at Barcelona.
The last player to wear No. 25 for Barça was striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who joined the club in January 2022.
Other notable players to have worn the No. 25 jersey include Thomas Vermaelen, Jordi Masip, and Oier Olazabal.
Szczesny has primarily worn the No. 1 jersey throughout his career at Arsenal and Juventus. However, he did wear No. 25 during his loan spell at AS Roma, and it appears he will don that number once again at Barcelona.
